Our Journey

The Denbies Story

Set in Dorking, in the heart of the Surrey Hills, Denbies Wine Estate is England’s largest single-estate vineyard.

Who we are

Independently owned and run, the estate spans 380 acres, with 265 acres under vine and the capacity to produce up to one million bottles. The first vines were planted here in 1986, marking the beginning of a quietly ambitious English wine story.

Today, Denbies is led by CEO Christopher White and is recognised as one of England’s most established wineries. Over the years, the estate has welcomed members of the Royal Family, continuing a historic connection that dates back to Prince Albert’s visit to Denbies in 1851.

Thank you for visiting Denbies Wine Estate. We hope you enjoy your time with us and take a moment to explore the vineyard, the views and the landscape that make this place so special.

The history of Denbies

The Denbies story began in 1986, when the White family recognised the potential of the estate’s sweeping south-facing slopes, chalk-rich soils and naturally warm microclimate. These conditions, so characteristic of the North Downs, offered the foundation for what would become England’s largest single-estate vineyard. The chateau-style winery followed in 1993, the same year our maiden release, Surrey Gold, first appeared. Today, it remains one of the UK’s bestselling English wines.

The scale and diversity of the estate have always allowed Denbies to innovate. With parcels of the same grape variety planted across different parts of the vineyard, each with its own altitude, aspect and soil structure, the fruit expresses distinct layers of flavour and character. Chalk and flint lend freshness and minerality; variations in slope and exposure bring nuance and texture. It is this range of terroirs that shapes the breadth and style of our wines.

As demand for traceable, locally produced food and wine continues to grow, Denbies remains committed to full estate control from vine to bottle. Every wine is made exclusively from grapes grown on the estate and undergoes rigorous testing through the English Quality Wine Scheme, ensuring clarity, authenticity and quality.

The vineyard and winery are open to visitors and trade guests throughout the year, offering a rare opportunity to see English wine production first-hand, meet the people behind the wines and experience the landscape that shapes them. Just 25 miles from central London, Denbies remains proudly rooted in Surrey, focused on producing wines with a clear sense of place.

Winemaking at Denbies

Oliver Whitfield

Vineyard Manager

Oliver Whitfield joined Denbies in 2022, bringing experience from vineyards and wineries in both England and New Zealand. His career in wine began in Marlborough, New Zealand, before he returned to the UK to study Wine Production at Plumpton College.

At Denbies, Oliver oversees the vineyard throughout the growing season, from pruning and canopy management to harvest decisions and long-term vine health. Since joining the estate, he has helped bring in some of the largest harvests in Denbies’ history.

Meet the Winemakers

Andy Kershaw

Cellar Master

Andy Kershaw joined Denbies in late 2013 after working as Assistant Winemaker at Willow Bridge Estate in Western Australia.

His winemaking career began in South Africa’s Swartland region at Dragonridge Wines, where he worked under Johan Simons. Since then, Andy has gained international experience across several leading wine regions, including Marlborough in New Zealand, Chianti Classico in Italy and a number of English estates. This broad background gives him a strong understanding of both traditional techniques and modern cool-climate winemaking.

At Denbies, Andy brings energy and curiosity to the cellar. He has been closely involved in developing wines such as Orange Solaris and Orange Vermouth, helping to show the creative potential of grapes grown on the estate.

Dave Fallon

Assistant Vineyard Manager

Dave Fallon has worked at Denbies for more than 30 years and is one of the estate’s most experienced vineyard hands. Originally trained as a tree surgeon, he began his career in conservation at Wimbledon Common before joining Denbies in 1993 as a vineyard and winery hand.

Today, Dave supports the day-to-day management of the vineyard and plays a key role in the estate’s environmental best practice. His long experience gives him a deep understanding of Denbies’ vines, soils and seasonal rhythms.
